Learned avoidance of trap locations in freshwater turtles

چکیده

Context Understanding the effects that learned responses to being captured have on subsequent recapture rates and associated abundance estimates is important for developing accurate descriptions of populations communities. Although variation in willingness individual turtles be trapped commonly mentioned literature, few studies experimentally tested trap avoidance (or fondness) turtles. Aims To determine whether learn avoid traps, repositioning traps will lead increased capture rates, this effect varies among species, such relocations yield more depictions community structure. Methods We studied a small lake south-eastern Kansas included red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) common musk (Sternotherus odoratus). 35 consecutive days by using two concurrently deployed groups traps. One group remained stationary duration study, whereas comprising other were moved new locations Day 14 returned their original 28, thus dividing trapping season into three periods. Key results For both declined over time. However, T. s. elegans than did those during second period S. odoratus third period. Traps also had higher Population based captures from group, pool all similar elegans, but produced an estimate much lower generated captures. Conclusions Both species exhibited locations, relocating distinct different accuracy observed structure was improved Implications The movement patterns catchability individuals within must taken consideration when protocols. Even high-intensity long may not generate sample if use spatial environment substantially ways locations.

Terrestrial habitat requirements of nesting freshwater turtles

Because particular life history traits affect species vulnerability to development pressures, cross-species summaries of life history traits are useful for generating management guidelines. Conservation of aquatic turtles, many members of which are regionally or globally imperiled, requires knowing the extent of upland habitat used for nesting. Therefore, we compiled distances that nests and gr...

Taphonomy of Freshwater Turtles: Decay and Disarticulation in Controlled Experiments

We conducted an experimental study of the timing and nature of taphonomic processes in turtles that allowed a comparison among different environments. We documented decay and disarticulation of freshly-killed aquatic turtles in controlled settings, including freshwater and seawater aquaria, and outdoor terrestrial settings protected from scavengers. The study area was in hot and dry southern Ca...
